This week, Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to work alongside local police officers to investigate the speed of drivers on Lightfoot Lane – just outside our school!

We split into two groups, and everyone had a turn using the radar speed gun to measure how fast different vehicles were travelling. We carefully recorded all of the data as we went.

If a vehicle was travelling at 20mph or below, we gave the driver a thumbs up and waved our signs in support. We even received a few nods and beeps of appreciation in return! The children thoroughly enjoyed this part of the experience.

If we measured a car travelling at 24mph or above, the police officer pulled the driver over. The children then had the opportunity to speak with the driver and advise them on making safer choices. They asked thoughtful questions such as:

  • “Do you understand the dangers of speeding near a school?”
  • “Were you distracted while driving?”
  • “Are you aware this road is next to a school?”

The children approached each conversation with maturity, sensibility, and sincerity. At the end of each interaction, they asked the driver if they would speed again – and all of them agreed not to. The class agreed to forgive them, and the police officers let them go with a warning.

Overall, the children had a fantastic time and a valuable learning experience. We are very grateful to the police officers for taking time out of their busy schedules to support us and let us use their equipment. Hopefully, this work will continue to raise awareness and help keep Lightfoot Lane – and other areas – safe.
